Rob Lowe AKA Supermundane

Rob Lowe, who goes under the pseudonym Supermundane, is an illustrator, graphic designer and artist practitioner. Hearing him speak in college, I feel that the visual aims of his work resonate with theories I have been exploring within this research project.

I think that he could be a possible case study for Chapter III of my extended essay. Following on from the talk I did some more research into his practice - reading or watching online interviews. It could be an idea, however, to further contact him again in order to speak about his work?

Found Quotes :
  • "Because there's so little there, you've got to get it all right; you don't know where to hide. They look very simple, but they take a lot of iterations before I'm happy" (Lowe in Himelfarb, 2014)
  • “I put simplicity at the heart of everything. Even though some of my work can be complex it is still simple. I try to approach all my work in an instinctive manner. I like leaving a bit of ambiguity so people can bring some of themselves to anything I do.” (Lowe in Butler, 2015)
  • “I’m good at composition. I love having a few elements on a page and getting them to balance in a way that excites me. I think this comes from having trained in graphic design before the domination of computers, even in my first job, artwork was done by hand and passed-up on boards. When you are physically moving things around it gives you a much better idea of how they balance” (Lowe in Butler, 2015)
  • “In terms of creativity I think we need to have  space. The creative world exists in the border between fact and fiction and sometimes everything needs to be so quantified and proved that the factual elements punch out creativity. I work in quite an instinctive way, but when you have to prove everything then it becomes very tiresome and very hard to make mistakes or produce something that’s new.” (Lowe,
  • “I used to be more known for this organic illustration style, and I’ve refined that to this more geometric style. Every line and pattern that I use is very important. So I use lines and the way they link together is always about trying to play with the expectation of peoples brains.” (Lowe in Glug, 2017)
  • “At the basis of it is this love of line for the sake of line. I use them optically, I try to use weird perspectives or in my more organic drawing where every line intersects with every other line and because of  that they create this idea of depth that isn’t there.” (Lowe in Dzierza, 2014)
