I decided to expand upon my earlier discussion of learned and innate symbols through looking at representations of gender.
It is clear that the mars (symbol for male) and the venus (symbol for female) would be learned symbols associated with gender. The symbol of a man and woman as figures could be innate, however the only thing that differentiates these figures would be the line of a skirt - which is a learned association with the female gender. One could argue that swapping the colours round blue (female) and pink (male) with these symbols, on a quick glance could mean one being mistaken for the other - the difference is so subtle. The only innate symbols of gender, therefore may be representations of the female and male genitalia.
