Lecture: Research and Epistemology Part 2

I found this lecture actually really useful in helping me work through and generate ideas for my research question. It made me better understand how we should be approaching context of practice and why we are doing it as a module on the course.

KEY POINTS

  • Research is driven by the need to generate ideas
  • SLOW HUNCH - ideas take a long time to develop.
  • Sometimes you need lots of 'small hunches' to come together to make an idea fully formed - this is why idea generation is most successful in an environment were 'hunches' can mingle and swap.
  • Steven Johnson "Where good ideas come from"
  • Research is finding out what is already out there, but you can take this information and create new connections
  • In order to analyse your research - look for common themes, cross-analyse, compare and contrast.
  • YOU are at the centre of your research. What you know, influences what you want to know, and what you find out/know influences what you make.
  • In order to figure out your research question, ask yourself these questions:
    • Why am I doing this? What is my purpose?
    • What do I know?
    • What do I want/need to know?
    • How are you going to find out about it/what do you need to do to research this?
